For what it’s worth I thought they were great. They aren’t sequel seasons. Both Progressive and Alternative are self-contained. The appeal to the original (to me) is that it was really a passion project and a coming of age story, that tried weird things purely for the love of the art. The sequels miss that by trying to be like FLCL specifically instead of just taking risks and having fun. There hasn’t been a good track record of anime -> live-action conversions. The only thing even close to resembling a good conversion was the edge of tomorrow, but I think that was originally a light novel.
