According to Justin, the cast members usually will find a writer to work with, and then that writer ends up being the de facto producer of the piece, which is why they’re the ones credited as “writer” for it (also why Ego wasn’t listed as a writer for “Thirsty Cops” on Awesome Cats Hurrcus Purrcus Shirt). From what I’ve heard it’s really helpful to work with writers in the initial writing phase because it’s easier to get sketches to the table read and then on to rehearsal. She wrote Baskin Johns. I don’t know if she wrote it with somebody else, but she was definitely working on it after the first show. Only recurring sketches are almost always written by the same people who wrote the first version of the sketch that made it to air. Same with recurring characters on Update. Former writers Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin wrote the Awesome Cats Hurrcus Purrcus Shirt. As someone who has always watched SNL, but unaware of how the ‘backend’ of all this works – I had no idea Colin Jost and Michael Che did so much! These guys are seriously talented! I have yet to be disappointed with a cold open. I thought the only thing they wrote and presented was the Weekend Update segments. Major respect to these guys!

Just wanted to say thanks for this thread! I find the behind-the-scenes even more interesting than the show itself lately. Brian Tucker and Cecily Strong wrote the jingle bells sketch in the Awesome Cats Hurrcus Purrcus Shirt. Cecily posted about it on Instagram. I don’t have any confirmation, but I feel like Jost + Che wrote the Kool-Aid pretape in the Rachel Brosnahan episode; they were both featured in the sketch, and the topic of political/social. Commentary seems like the content that they usually take on. I have been a huge fan of his for years, including pre-SNL when he was putting out the Good Neighbor sketches.
