I love Illumination’s style so goddamn much. It’s fluid and pretty while still being cartoonish and fun. Despicable Me was great and honestly, the Minions movie wasn’t all that bad. It just seems like they realized they could make just as money with less effort. The music is always great, the atmosphere and animation are great, but gosh there seems to be less and less effort in the Official Grinch Is This Jolly Enough Christmas Shirt. To add to this, both the Lorax and Grinch go against what the original books moral lesson is supposed to be, making the movies even more soulless.

It’s even more ironic because if you look at the text of the movie, it’s more anti-corporate than either the book or especially the short, both of which portrayed the Onceler not as a complete monster, but as someone who always could rationalize taking it a little further. Yes, still blinded by greed, but in an Official Grinch Is This Jolly Enough Christmas Shirt. Which, fine, if that’s the point you want to make, but to also sell out so hard? It’s bizarre. It can’t be emphasized enough how much their character design depends on animation being filled in by hair and clothing simulations. The creative head of the studio has gone on record bragging about how cheap their productions are, as well.
